The Artists Sketchbook
This drawing of my daughter Jenny, is just one of those drawings that I try to do once in a while, that helps sharpen and maintain my skills. She is also the only one out of my children so far who I've been able to get to sit for a portrait from life. All the rest say, take a picture. Arrg!! They're missing the point. I'm trying to not work from the easily delineated frozen image of a photograph, but rather from life. It is much more challenging, but much more rewarding and satisfying.

Cedars and Sage (Coyote Hill)
"Cedars and Sage (Coyote Hill)" Oil on Muslin on Panel 11" X 14" 2010
Marilynn and I participated in the Spring City Arts, plein air competition this past weekend in Central Utah. This painting received "best of show" honors at the event. Win or not, I love these events, but it's an affliction I'm glad I have. This image was painted as an after thought with just 3 hours left in the competition. I wasn't happy with the image I started the day before, so I turned it on its side and cranked this one out. The paint was about 30 minutes old when I turned it in.
